Chicago Translation Services|Translation Services Biggest Myth by Mark Ohlsen

Translation Services Chicago - Are you thinking of translating your marketing materials and training materials into a foreign language? If so, there's a lot you should know before you choose a language translation services company.

We have put together a series of articles designed to help you get superior results when you translate your material into a foreign language. This particular article in the series happens to be my personal favorite: The Biggest Myth about working in a foreign language.

You may be aware that some languages are in fact more wordy than others, which basically means it can take longer to say the same thing in one language than another.

The myth is that the video must expanded to accommodate the new foreign language audio length.

This is simply not true.

What we are talking about here is the difference between a LITERAL translation, which can be longer, and colloquial word choice, which can (BETTER) fit the timings of the English narration.

Here is an example of what I'm talking about. We start out by having a bilingual formatted Word document. This simply mean you can see the English on the left and the Spanish translation on the right. If you watch the corresponding video, you'll be able to see this in action. In the video you can see that the word-for-word Spanish translation is too long. The video shows you what happens when we edit the translation using colloquial language. By using what is called "Track Changes"' in Microsoft Word, we show you what text we took out and what text we replaced it with. If you watch the video, you can see how much better timed the script becomes with the local idioms replacing the literal translation.

Just knowing this should take away a lot of the fear about translating your media into another language.

And there are many other tricks of the trade, both the audio engineer and the most experienced translators will know to make the timing come out right WITHOUT adding more footage to your original videos, when it's done the right way.

Having said all that I feel I must address here: two questions that most of you are probably asking yourself. And those are: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE TRANSLATION WHEN YOU TAKE THE TEXT OUT? and AREN'T YOU COMPROMISING THE ACCURACY?

THESE ARE VERY GOOD QUESTIONS... BUT the answer here is, Absolutely NOT!

An experienced language translation service vendor NEVER - and let me emphasize NEVER - compromises the CONTENT of any script. Without going into great detail here, to understand how that can be done, all you have to so is ask yourself, "Are there more efficient ways to say things in the other language?

HERE'S A very SIMPLE English EXAMPLE OF THIS:

If we say, "I will need to go down to the grocery store and it's too far to walk. Do you mind if I drive your car to get there?"

We could say instead, "I need to go to the grocery store. Can I borrow your car?"

Now I will admit that this is a pretty aggressive edit. Depending on the actual speed and timings of the English source you may not have to go that far, but if you needed to you could. It's implied that it's too far to walk, so a car is needed. The rest is simply a more efficient way to say the same thing.

So as you can see there's a BIG DIFFERENCE IN ACTUAL TIME IT TAKES TO SAY those phrases BUT the content and meaning stays the same.

All too often we see translated scripts come in from our clients or their clients with very accurate but badly timed translation as it relates to working with a video. You simply can't have an English paragraph that is 20 seconds long and an Spanish translation that's 30 seconds long.

Something's gotta give. And in our 27 years of experience, we have found this to be the absolute BEST way to get a high quality product without going OVER budget.

There is a more basic question to ask--Why is it so important right now to get your marketing materials, or your client's marketing and training materials, translated into other languages? Multi-language translations and media productions work together to create more secure revenues. Companies that can cross language barriers have the competitive advantage. If you are not helping your clients cross the language barrier yet, why are you missing this opportunity?

Do you believe you don't have the capacity? Do you perceive it to be a pain and an annoyance? Have you had a bad experience?

Bad translations DO happen. Organizations with the finest and most painstakingly developed image appear as total amateurs if their message is put across inappropriately or incorrectly. Never ask a plumber to do an electrician's job: The results can be disastrous, seriously damaging your organizations' credibility.

Here are a few examples:

As Gerber discovered, branding can become a bit limiting when you go global. Since "Gerber" is also the French word for vomiting - Gerber is not in France!

Irish Mist didn't do well in Germany where it was marketed with the semi-Germanized Irischer Mist, which would translate back to English as Irish dung.

Traficante is an Italian brand of mineral water. In Spanish, it means drug dealer.

Israeli radio and press ran ads for the Intimidate Dating Service. "Intimi" is the Hebrew word for intimate.

The European hardware store chain "Gotzen" opened a mall in Istanbul. "Got" means "ass" in Turkish. They changed the name to "Tekzen"

Those examples show why it's so important when you choose a foreign translation services vendor to choose wisely and avoid these problems. Be sure to look for a foreign language translation services company that knows what it's doing. You might just have to hire a more experienced company to get it right - or take the chance of running into negative consequences if you don't!

Today more than ever, businesses are using multi-language translations to gain and sustain a competitive advantage. Beware: Your untapped markets can become an advantage for the competition. If you're not doing foreign language translations, someone else is!

I hope this helps your understanding of language translation services as it relates to your media and your clients' marketing and training materials.
