Divorce Books For Kids
What book would you recommend for a toddler dealing with divorce?
I need a good book for my soon to be 3 year old deal with HIS particular situation. His dad and I divorced over 2 years ago but his dad really isn't in his life. He uses drugs and when he is sober he is the perfect daddy. BUT THAT'S RARELY!!! I use to beg his Dad to come see him and I finally decided I shouldn't be having to put in all this effort. I stopped calling him to come see his son about 4 months ago. All the divorce books for kids talk about mommy and daddy not being together but about getting to go to Mommys house and Daddys house. He doesn't get to go to Daddy's house. I really need a good book for him and for me. Thanks
A 3 year-old doesn't have the ability to connect stories in books to real-life events. That involves too much abstract thinking. Your 3 year-old's brain is more focused on learning about the physical non-abstract world around him. If you want to help him, speak to him using your own words and explain the situation, if necessary.
Don't bring it up yourself. Wait until your son brings his dad up again, so that you're not just introducing stress into his life. When he asks about his daddy, explain how all families are different: some families have just a mommy, some have just a daddy, some have grandparents and no mommy or daddy, some have two daddies... Then say your family is made up of you and him. Tell him that you don't know when he will see daddy again, that it could be a long time. Tell your son you love him and that you two are a good family and will keep being a good family.
DON'T say anything bad about his father. Don't lie to your son and say he won't see his dad ever again, if there's still a chance his dad could come back.
Definitely tell your son that he can talk about his dad, or ask questions. Never treat his father like an off-topic subject. Answer his questions without being emotional about it.
Your son will not make a big deal out of it, if you don't.
Best of luck!
